Russell Avocado, Flower type A, West Indies

Feb. 23, 2012
I planted 4 Russells about 4 years ago. A couple of these trees are over 12 feet tall and healthy. I have not seen one fruit on them. Seems very susceptible to cold. On the other hand I have seen mature trees 20-30 years old with hundreds of fruit. It may be a juvenile thing with this variety.
Update July 3, 2012.
Much to my surprise I saw 10 to 15 fruits growing in the Russell trees. I'm looking forward to taste the fruit. The Pine Island Avocado viewer list this variety maturing in July and August, the fruit in my trees seem too small.
Update July 9: A friend who has what appears to be a Russell tree about 50-60 years old, gave me two fruits from his tree. See picture below. The large one is 39 oz and the small 32 oz. He indicated his trees has well over 400-500 fruit,. Interesting because my fruit is very small now, probably 12 oz or so. The trees are only 1/4 mile away from each other. Most of the time we overlook the juvenile period of a grafted tree. There is something different about the curvature of these two: The Russell above has like a wide angle (boomerang like) while the fruit bellow is more of a smooth curve. I wonder is they are one and the same.
Update August 23, 2012: My trees in my grove finally produce fruit. I have 4 trees thay all had an average of 10 fruit each. Some growing very large 12" long and 42 oz. Fruit quality is decent. I would not rate it 5 stars but 4. I'm leaving some on the trees to see if the flavor improves. Some pictures in the album bellow.
Update September 18, 2012. The Russell season is over. This is the first year that I have a lot of Russell fruit to share with family and friends. I have to say , I'm disappointing. The fruit is nice looking but that is about it. Is watery, the wider part matures before the neck. I do not think is worth 5 Stars as some web sites are reporting. Flavor wise I would rate it a 2.5. I would probably top work the others and leave just one tree with Russell. Fruit wise not worth it. "El Pipe" is much better fruit.
September 15, 2013: I had a decent production on my 4 Russell trees. I also think they tastes better than last year. No doubt this variety has a juvenile period both in production and quality. One particular tree is holding a lot of fruit now, the other 3 dropped what I did not pick.
