Poncho Avocado B Flower type
December 6, 2014: I came into bud wood early this year after I was told it was a B flower tree. I was not sure about flowering time is South Florida but I top worked a tree probably in February 2014. The tree is growing well. There is little reliable information on line except that is is a Mexican Race and cold hardy.
There is no mention of this variety in any serious data base, I'm not even sure what it looks like. Today I passed by the tree and it has flowers extending very similar like a Mexicola so there is some Mexican in it, but no anise smell so it is probably a Hybrid of sorts. Mexican varieties seem to flower early in my grove so this is a confirmation of heritage. I could not see open flowers at eye level but I'm sure that in a few days I will be able to confirm flower type. I have seem Pancho Avocado, not sure if it is the same.
December 9, 2014: Confirmed the Poncho Avocado tree is a B type flower. The picture below was taken at around 10 am clearly male flowers open.
January 24, 2015: The poncho tree continues to be a bit past full bloom but it seems it has 10 days more of flowers. I'm beginning to see some fruit set.
February 1, 2015: The Poncho flowers keep on giving, huge flowers and more to come. Beginning to see quite a few fruit set.
March 9, 2015: The tree keeps on giving. It has 1 oz size fruit, it's setting more fruit and it has a few new flowers. See today's Pictures.
March 22, 2015: This tree has today at 11 am both male and female flowers open. Mostly males. The tree keeps setting fruit. Can't wait to taste it.
April 13, 2015: The tree is setting and growing fruit nicely. Seems like the was a second bloom from the February cold snap. There are still some flowers on this tree.
May 19, 2015: The fruit is growing slowly and is about 4-5 oz. The tree is growing well, the fruit is showing signs of stress and problems related to the last few days of high temperatures. The skin is showing circular cracks and got the feeling some fruit my start to fall off. Some fruit is loosing its shine, Will monitor closely. See today's pictures.
May 31, 2017: I will not do more post on this. As a fruit it is worthless. Extremely productive. Unable to take the heat and humidity. Tasted awful. One thing is good for, it is a hell of a pollination for early A flower trees like Donies,
