Hass Avocado G X G X M hybrid
I have a two-three year old tree on the ground. I'm planing to document the Hass growing in South Florida specialty next to a Florida Hass. I have shot some video but I will wait until the trees flower and bear fruit to put it together . In the mean time I have posted pictures of the leaves on both varieties.
Update May 2012. The tree was cut probably by accident, not sure by who. It was cut 18 inches above ground so it would come back. Specially at this time of the year, it may just delay things a bit.
Update February 2013: The cut tree has come back but is about 24 inches from the ground. I would not expect any fruit this year.
January 17, 2014: It has taken this tree a while to recover. It is now like 7-8 feet and it is in stage 510 of bud development.
February 27, 2014: I took a couple of picture, the tree has recovered well and looks like it will flower this year. The tree is now about 6 ft tall.
June 1, 2014: The tree is recovering well from the accidental decapitation of Early 2012. It did flower an set one fruit that I don't expect to survive.
October 18, 2014: The fruit is still on the tree and the tree is recovering well, but is not a fast grower in here.
December 12, 2014: I saw the only fruit in the tree changing to a dull green so I decided to pick it about 7-8 days ago. Today seemed like it was ready. I cut it open and to my surprise was clean and nice. I prepared with some lemon and salt. There were 4 people in the house at the time and we all got to taste it. The consensus was it taste equal or better than store bought Hass. It was a small fruit I did not weight it because I was not expecting such a good taste. Probably 4-5 oz. Very small I did take a picture after I cut it open. I guess next year would be crucial for this tree. One of the problems with Hass in Florida is dwarfism in the fruit. The surprise here is that I was expecting some of the problems that I had been experiencing with the Florida Hass and Lamb Hass. None were present. The taste was quite superior to Florida Hass.
March 3, 2015: The tree has few open flowers and it has expanding inflorescence in most of the tree. The tree still small, I think partially because is not getting enough sun where it is.
May 16, 2015: The Hass tree finally recovered. Set a good number of fruit for its size. Fruit is growing well. Lets see if the fruit looks like the single one it produced last year. They are growing well, clean and rather larger than what I expected. See today's Pictures.
August 6, 2015: This is the time of the year that Hass Avocado hates it in So. Florida. High heat and humidity. The fruit is not growing much. Some have turned black and dropped the size of a small egg. The tree is doing average does not give the impressions that its thriving here.
December 12, 2015: The tree is holding the fruit is has well. No drop. the fruit still small. 4-6 oz. The color is beginning to get a bit opaque. Possible color change soon.
February 6, 2016: Finally the Hass fruit is beginning to darken. Picked 4 today. All small 6-7 oz. Definetly very small fruit. Not sure how they will ripen. See today's pictures.
